Blackpool Boss Plans Late Bids for Bristol City and Tranmere Rovers Targets

Ian Holloway, the Blackpool manager, is believed to be preparing two late bids in an attempt to bolster his squad before the January transfer window shuts.

Dale Jennings, the Tranmere Rovers youngster, has been attracting a lot of interest following a string of excellent displays for the League One side and it is thought Holloway wants to table an early bid in the hope that the lure of playing his expansive style of football and the Premier League will be enough for Rovers to part with their prized assets.

Due to the shoe-string budget that Blackpool have to play with it is rumoured that Marvin Elliott, the athletic Bristol City central midfielder, has been scouted by Blackpool as a potential replacement to Charlie Adam should the talk of his transfer to Liverpool come to fruition. No official approach has been made by the Lancashire club but it is thought that City value Elliott at around £1m which may prove to be a stumbling block

Leeds closed the gap to table toppers Norwich City to four points with this easy win at Prenton Park. Jermaine Beckford scored his 26th and 27th goals of the season and goals from Luciano Becchio and Richard Snodgrass helped Simon Grayson’s Elland Road outfit to a comfortable win at struggling Tranmere Rovers.

Tranmere have sacked manager John Barnes and assistant boss Jason McAteer after a run of just two league wins from 11 matches.
The club are 22nd in League One and were knocked out of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy on Tuesday.
“Unfortunately results have not gone our way this season and we are at the wrong end of the table,” chairman Peter Johnson told the club website.
“We must now focus on finding the best possible candidate.”
Physio Les Parry has been placed in temporary charge and will be assisted by reserve boss Shaun Garnett.
Johnson added: “I urge all supporters to get behind Les, Shaun and the team on Monday when we play at home to Stockport County.”
Former England midfielder Barnes previously had an unsuccessful spell as manager of Celtic. (BBC Sport)

Well this was on the cards pretty much hours after he was appointed manager at Prenton Park. You have to feel sorry for John Barnes, he really hasn’t taken to this whole managerial lark half as well as he did to bombing down the wing.

Tranmere made a grave error when they sacked Ronnie Moore and it may be a decision that haunts them for some time.

Do Derby want to return to the Premiership?

Derby County Football Club. Remember them? They were the team that accepted relegation from the Premier League as a given by November. They were the team who conceded six goals at home. Twice.

Well it seems that Derby County don’t really have any intention of playing with the big boys any time soon. Well, thats the theme they seem to give off with the latest transfers and rumours flying in and around Pride Park.

First of all, the move to sign Nottingham Forest’s midfielder Kris Commons. A player who was playing League One football last season. Then they bid £2m for Swansea’s Dutch midfielder Ferrie Bodde. Another player who played in League One last season, and only scored 3 times. Then the BBC link Derby to Stockport’s Liam Dickinson, who scored 21 goals last season…. in League Two (he was even playing in the Unibond First Division 3 years ago!)

Now, finally, Derby annouce they’ve signed winger Steve Davies from Tranmere. Another one from a League One club.

With this influx of interest in lower league footballers, are Derby County quite happy to “slum it” in the Championship for the next few years? They certainly don’t really seem to be trying to bring in top class talent that will get them promoted. Granted, Bristol City got to the Play-Off final and 90 minutes away from the Premiership while spending £1m on a fresh-from-League-One Lee Trundle, but its not exactly a blueprint for success.

Does anyone else think Derby want to get back into the top league? Or are they embarrassed to show their faces up there again?
