Police have arrested two teenagers in connection with racist abuse posted on Newcastle United striker Sammy Ameobi’s Twitter account.

The 19-year-old, was called a “n****r” by a follower with the username @JonnnnyPhipps after the footballer tweeted a photo of a black pair of boots.

The Englishman, who broke into the first team at the end of last season and is becoming a fans’ favourite, retweeted the abuse he received, and his attacker’s account was closed down.

Both Newcastle United and the player reported the matter to police.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said today: “On Wednesday November 2 Northumbria Police arrested two young men, both aged 17, on suspicion of malicious communication.

“The arrests come after reports of a racist tweet being sent to one of the region’s professional sportsmen.”

Ameobi had posted a message alongside the photo of the Nike boots, saying: “There will always be a place in my heart for the all blacks.”

The abuser replied: “Your hand is nearly the same colour. £n****r.”

Retweeting the message, Ameobi added: “Sad to see some people are still racist nowadays.”

The police investigation follows allegations of racial abuse directed at Anton Ferdinand of QPR and the Manchester United defender Patrice Evra.

The 26-year-old is currently involved in a Football Association investigation into whether Blues captain John Terry made a racist comment to him.

The former England U21 international released a statement on Monday saying he had “strong feelings” on the matter and backed the FA’s inquiry.

Ferdinand used his Twitter to account to retweet messages of support he has received from fans from all clubs and races.

But he also showed a shocking racist jibe at him apparently from a Chelsea fan.

“RT@Brennan6666: @anton_ferdinand RT this you fucking BLACK ****, 1 England captain,” Ferdinand tweeted.

There have been calls for the QPR centre-half to report the crime to the police.

Terry has denied racially abusing Ferdinand, who he admitted had accused him of making a racist remark, but insisted his own response was actually a denial and not racist in any way.

The Three Lions skipper could lose the armband if found guilty of racially abusing a fellow footballer on the pitch.

A journalist on one of Britain’s most respected newspapers – who also appears on a widely-viewed BBC programme – could face a jail sentence after naming on Twitter a Premier League footballer who had taken out a privacy injunction.
In the first case of its kind, lawyers for the soccer star have persuaded a High Court judge to ask Attorney General Dominic Grieve QC to consider a criminal prosecution against the writer for breaching a privacy injunction. If Mr Grieve decides to issue contempt of court proceedings, the individual faces a prison sentence of up to two years.
The unprecedented legal action is the latest attempt by a public figure to try to curb the growing use of the internet – especially Twitter – to expose the adulterous affairs and misbehaviour of celebrities and footballers.

Seriously? The Premier League footballer at the centre of this saga would surely be better off just coming out and admitting his affair rather than attempting to gag the thousands of people who have revealed his name on Twitter. By trying to bring to court all those who have named and shamed the footballer he has in fact just brought even more attention to his actions.

It seems highly unlikely that the journalist in question will be jailed for his Tweeting of the Premier League footballer as to do so would open the floodgates as then anyone else who had tweeted his identity would also have to face similar punishments and that would set a very dangerous and extremely absurd precedent.

This situation is of course made all the more bizarre by the fact that super injunction is only valid in England and papers and websites based outside the country have been freely revealing the love-rat.

West Ham striker Carlton Cole has been charged with improper conduct over comments he made on Twitter during England’s friendly against Ghana.

Cole, 27, referred to the large numbers of Ghana fans at Wembley Stadium in comments he later deleted.

He tweeted: “Immigration has surrounded the Wembley premises! I knew it was a trap! Hahahaha.

“The only way to get out safely is to wear an England jersey and paint your face w/ the St. George’s flag!”

The England international, who claimed his comments were a joke, has until 1600 BST on 13 April to respond to the charge. (BBC Sport)

Well this was always likely to happen. Regardless of whether Carlton Cole’s comments offended anyone, and one wonders if a single person took them to heart, it seems inevitable that the West Ham man would be charged with improper conduct and if he is handed a ban it could well have a huge effect on the Hammers fight against relegation.

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has apparently blasted his favourite Gunners’ player on Twitter and demands he improve his performances.

@Wrighty_8, an account on the social networking site Twitter claiming to be the Highbury legend, has demanded striker Robin Van Persie recreate his old form and rescue Arsenal’s season.

Arsene Wenger’s side suffered a dire goalless draw at home to Blackburn Rovers last weekend leaving them seven points behind league leaders Manchester United.

West Ham United striker Carlton Cole has been accused of racism over a joke he posted on social networking site Twitter.

The 27-year-old implied in his tweet that the Ghanaian football fans were to be deported after the game at Wembley by immigration officers.

The England international did not stop there and said the Football Association would organise friendlies with Poland and Albania to do the same thing.

Cole, who claimed the comments were just a joke, has endured a bad season so far for the Hammers only scoring five goals in 28 Premier League games.
