Bojinov celebrates a goal he didn’t score!
If there’s one area where Manchester City have been lacking this season, it’s in the striking department, although the signing of Benjani has improved matters. Nevertheless, City fans will also be delighted to see Valeri Bojinov making a return from injury as the club continue to aim for a UEFA Cup place at the end of the season. The official City website reports that the Bulgarian forward scored for the reserves in a 1-1 draw at Newcastle with Sven looking on.
“I’m very happy because after five months out since my injury my first game back went well. I scored my first goal for Manchester City as well, which was very important for me.
“I only played 30 minutes, but I hope to play for maybe 45 in the next one, and then a full 90 minutes after that.”
And for Bojinov there was one very important onlooker at St James’ Park he was keen to impress, as he added: “Sven was in the crowd to see me play, and I’m pleased that he came to see how I played in my first game back.”
Will the former Fiorentina striker now form a burgeoning partnership with Benjani or will his first team performances be limited between now and the end of the season? Sven will at least be glad to finally have some attacking options after spending so much of the season persisting with Vassell as the lone man up front.

Manchester City manager Sven-Goran Eriksson is delighted to get the news that both Valeri Bojinov and Michael Johnson shall be back to first team action in a few days’ time after the duo came out unscathed during Monday’s reserves match against Newcastle United.
The Swede says:
Bojinov is not ready for the first team yet, but it was good for him to get back. He played 30 minutes and scored a nice goal and in that time you could see that he understands the game technically. He sees things early and links up well. He will be like a new signing. I don’t think he will be ready for our next game but I know it was a huge relief for him to be back. He has not stopped smiling since.
That is yet another good news for Eriksson whose side is back into a chance of finishing in the top four after defeating city rivals Manchester United 2-1 at the weekend.
