Valencia winger Vicente expects to join a Premier League club on a free transfer this summer and will make a decision on his future in the next few days.

The 29-year-old is out of contract with Valencia at the end of this month after 11 years with the Primera Liga side.

Blackburn, Newcastle and top-flight newcomers Swansea have all been linked with a swoop for the former Spain international.

And Vicente admits he “desires to play in the Premier League” and is close to reaching a deal.

He told Spanish newspaper Superdeporte: “In a few days I will decide my future and it will be in England.”

Having brought in Yohan Cabaye, Demba Ba and Sylvain Marveaux on free transfers it seems that Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew is keen to use his apparent shoestring budget to bring in the hugely experienced Valencia winger Vicente this summer.

Mapgies owner Mike Ashley appears unwilling to fork out much, if any, of the funds made from the £35m sale of Andy Carroll to Liverpool and that has led Pardew to having to look around for players who are without contracts and the 29 year old former Spanish international would appear therefore to be one of the best around who can be purchased for nothing.

Vicente has just completed his 11th season at Valencia and was a crucial part of the Mestalla club’s two La Liga successes.

Pardew will be looking to bring in top notch new additions in order to appease the likes of Jonas Gutierrez, Jose Enrique and Joey Barton who have all been strongly linked with St James’ Park exits but one wonders if the bringing in of freebies, albeit seemingly very good ones, is enough to prove the club has ambitions to push on towards the top six.

Harry Redknapp believes he can “solve his left-sided problem” by signing Valencia’s Vicente, another one of those Spanish players who was fashionable a few years ago but then just never seemed to go anywhere despite playing for a club allegedly trillions of Euros in debt. (Guardian)

28 year old Spanish international Vicente is experiencing something of a revival at the Mestalla, performing wonderfully well this term and helping his La Liga side towards the top two Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid but is he really a player who will greatly improve what Harry Redknapp already has to hand at White Hart Lane?

With Luka Modric out Redknapp has tried to play three pronged attack and for the most part it has helped to create numerous chances and even though the Tottenham boss would appear to prefer an out and out left winger to complement Aaron Lennon on the right, it may not be such a emergency to bring in Vicente.

After almost a decade at Valencia, Vicente bas become a household name in Spain but is almost as famous for his constant injuries problems which have meant he hasn’t managed to play more than 30 games in any season since 2003/04, and the price tag on his head, reportedly £11m, is far too much to risk on such a player.

I don’t see Harry pursuing this player and it is more likely that the Spanish side, wracked by financial worries, are probably trying to ‘big-up’ the ‘lesser’ players at the club so that they can try to make some money without having to offload any of their prized trio of Juan Mata, David Villa and David Silva.
