Last night Aston Villa were in Iceland, playing FH Hafnarfjarða, the current Landsbankadeild leaders. They lined-up with a strong team, including, surprisingly, influential captain and Liverpool target Gareth Barry. In playing in the game, Barry may have manoeuvred his way out of an £18m move to Anfield. [Read the rest of this entry »]

After losing his way through most of last season, Tottenham Hotspur’s ex-number one is casting his eye elsewhere after the signing of Heurelho Gomes from PSV Eindhoven, with Aston Villa his preferred destination.
Despite them not actually indicating they’d like to sign him, Paul Robinson has made it clear he wants to move to Villa Park to resurrect his career after such a fall down the White Hart Lane pecking order during most of the 2007/08 season.
Martin O’Neill is known to be looking for a keeper after Liverpool’s stubborness over Scott Carson and the release of Thomas Sorensen. Enquiries were made about Celtic’s Polish stopper Artur Boruc, but the Villans halted talks once the Bhoys quoted a £15m asking price, so Robinson appears to be a cheaper alternative.
And if they were to make a move, ‘Robbo’ would jump at the chance. A source close to him said:
Paul would welcome the opportunity to move to a club like Aston Villa.
He believes Martin O’Neill can help to bring the best out of him. He realises his chances of playing regularly at Tottenham look unlikely.
He feels such a move would help to resurrect his career.
Having seen many Aston Villa players receive call-ups to the England squad recently, perhaps Robinson sees Villa Park as the perfect destination to get some playing time and get noticed by Fabio Capello?
Aston Villa are on the verge of taking in poor Chelsea reject Steve Sidwell. Having proved all the doubters right, sitting on the Stamford Bridge bench all season, the ginger dynamo is finally making moves towards trying to be a footballer once again, a la Scott Parker. Olof Mellberg appears to have his days at Villa Park numbered, especially now that it has been confirmed that Italian giants Juventus have indeed launched an official approach for the player.
In an interview to Sky Sports, Villa manager Martin 0’Neill has admitted for the first time that Juventus have asked permission to talk to the player. Mellberg’s contract with the Premiership side expires in the summer when he will be a free agent. Meanwhile he can also signed a pre-contract agreement with the Old Lady in January as per the regulations.
O’Neill tells Sky Sports:
Juventus have sent a letter through saying they want to speak to Olof. It is their prerogative. I am not even sure that they have to do that but at least they have made their intentions clear. They are well within their rights to do so. Olof has been here seven years. He has earned the right to do this. He wants to have a wee look around and it might not be anything to do with money. It might be an environmental thing. If someone like Juventus have shown an interest, and within six months of your contract running out, I think you have to explore every avenue. I don’t plague him every single day about these things. I just let him get on with it and he might come around to formulating some idea in his head of what he wants to do.
Seems like O’Neill already knows that Mellberg cannot be persuaded to remain at Villa Park any longer. But will Villa be able to replace him in the summer?
