Watford 1-2 Newcastle United Championship Highlights (Video)

by Mad Dog and Glory on February 28th, 2010 167 words | 5 comments
  • Digg

Newcastle United moved six points clear at the top of the Championship after the St James’ Park side comfortably eased past Watford at Vicarage Road.

Argentine centre back Fabricio Coloccini put the Toon Army ahead early on and Andy Carroll scored early in the second half to kill the game off as a contest. The young striker is beginning to become a feared goalscorer and confidence is growing in the 21 year old who has now netted seven times in the last eight games.

Watford pulled a goal back late on through Will Hoskins but the mid-table side couldn’t muster any points from this encounter. Newcastle United boss Chris Hughton will be pleased with the way his side is playing of late but will hope that they do not get complacent as the season draws towards the final sprint.

‘You ain’t seen nothing yet’ claims Chelsea coach: Have Blues been unlucky this season?

With 70 minutes on the clock at Vicarage Road last Saturday, it appeared as though Chelsea’s season was in danger of hitting a new slump. Defeat at home to Burnley in the Carling Cup was humiliating, while the Blues have been labouring in the Premier League since the turn of the new year. However, the Premier League giants turned this round against Watford, and this Chelsea man now reckons there will no stopping his team. [Read the rest of this entry »]

Foster relieved at playing for Man United again

by sub on March 16th, 2008 196 words | 6 comments

Manchester United’s Premier League match with Derby County on Saturday was a special occasion for 24-year old custodian Ben Foster who was gifted his Man United debut.

Foster was on loan to Watford last season and his string of impressive performances did earn him a recall to the Old Trafford unit but he has been unable to play due to a lenghty injury. But now that Foster has returned into footballing action, the England international is pretty much buoyant and optimistic about his future.

Foster heaves a sigh of relief:

I finally feel like a United player now! I’ve been here nearly three years and it’s good to finally get on the pitch for the first team in a competitive game.

I’m not one for nerves – I just take things in my stride and try not to think about things too much.

It’s a big thing to come back from injury and to be thrown straight into the first team, but I thoroughly enjoyed it – though it was a bit harder than I thought!

Foster is a quality player and he is certainly in United manager Sir Alex Ferguson’s long term plans.

Sir Alex has faith in Ben Foster

by sub on March 14th, 2008 263 words | 3 comments

Manchester United manager Sir Alex has reiterated his faith in his 24-year old goalkeeper. Man United play rock bottom Derby County in the Premiership this weekend Sir Alex is ready to give Foster his season debut.

Sir Alex says:

Edwin van der Sar will miss the game.

Obviously, it’s a debut for Ben Foster, who I’d planned to let go on loan on Monday, but unfortunately for Tomasz Kuszczak he got sent off and misses the game tomorrow.

Ben will start and obviously he has been out for a year and has only one reserve game behind him, so it’s a big challenge for the boy.

There are certain things that encourage me about it. He’s got fantastic presence and speed, agility. I’ve got no fears he’ll be okay.

His training has been fantastic and he has done very well. He has been out for a long time, it was last June when he got the operation, but his rehabilitation went right and we did all the right things.

He’s come through very well. He has been training football-wise for over a month, so there is no question about his fitness level.

In terms of the match side of it, I don’t know about that. He has only had one reserve game, but he has so many assets that I’m confident about it.

Last season Foster was one of the best players in the Premiership and certainly the best for Watford but he has out this season until now. Foster is the best bet to replace Edwin van der Sar in the long run.

Ben Foster is back with his truck loads of ambition!

by sub on February 28th, 2008 387 words | 1 comment
  • Digg

World, watch out: Ben Foster is back! After 9 months of cruelly watching football from the surgeon’s room, the Manchester United goalkeeper is back and is raring to head back between the sticks.

He underlines his ambition to become Man United’s number one goalkeeper before long and also states that Danish great Peter Schmeichel was his idol while he was growing up.

Foster says this about his childhood hero:

Schmeichel was the one when I was growing up that everyone looked to and he is my goalkeeping idol.

If I have half the career Schmeichel had at United, I will have done pretty well. I try and model a few things on the way he played. I like his authority on the pitch and commanding style.

Everyone respected him so much – any opposition player coming through on goal thought twice about what they would do and you want to put that doubt in players’ minds.

Now to his battle against the long term ankle injury:

I had to have a full reconstruction of the ligament and they used a donor tendon. The surgeon thought that would give the best results but it takes a bit longer to knit in and that is why it was eight months rather than the usual six.

I haven’t got a clue who it came from but it feels good again – that is all I know. The surgeon assured me it was a good one – not from some 90-year-old woman whose tendon is ready to give way at any moment!

But if I can get in there, then you start looking further afield and if I can get into the England squad again then brilliant.

And finally to his ambition:

Last season playing week-in, week-out in the Premier League was massive for me and I handled myself well and got my England debut.

I felt like I could go back to United and really push for a starting place this season so the injury was very disappointing.

I think Fabio is going to be looking at all the English players though and how you play counts, not reputations, because he left David Beckham out.

Last season, the 24-year old was on loan at Watford for whom he was the best player. Foster is certainly a brilliant custodian who needs to play more and more regularly for him to succeed.

Liverpool line up another young star

by Mr Comfort on February 28th, 2008 176 words | 7 comments
  • Digg

If Scott Carson can’t even get a game at Anfield, what’s the point in them buying another goalkeeper called Scott?

Rafa Benitez is apparently looking to the future and attempting to beat a host of clubs to the signature of Watford’s up-and-coming goalkeeper Scott Loach (various).

But Liverpool face stiff competition from Newcastle for the 19-year-old who is currently on loan to League Two side Bradford, making him the youngest first-team keeper in the country.

Stuart Pearce is also said to be interested in calling him up for the England Under-21 squad.

Liverpool obviously have a history of great goalkeepers and in Pepe Reina they have a sound first-choice stopper. Obviously, things didn’t work at Anfield for Chris Kirkland, who was similarly impressive at a young age,

Scott Carson – on loan at Aston Villa – looks set to leave Merseyside also. One thing is for sure, Anfield reserve keeper Charles Itandje hasn’t impressed many with his uncertain displays. Clearly one for the future, Loach would be a good addition to the growing crop of young stars being accumulated by Benitez.

Foster fit again to play but Fergie not rushing him

by sub on February 27th, 2008 172 words | 1 comment
  • Digg

Last season Ben Foster was the best custodian in the English Premier League and that is something marvelous when you consider that he was actually on loan from Manchester United to Watford who got relegated to the Championship at the end of the season in spite of his bravery.

But since then Boster has been troubled by the injury monster and actually has been out for 9 months with a cruciate knee ligament problem.

But he is reported to have recovered now although Man United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is not all inclined to rush the 24-year old. Foster is certainly not going to play this weekend and shall play against Middlesbrough a week today in a reserve fixture. After that of course, he shall be drafted into the first team.

Foster’s return from injury would be gleefully noted by England national coach Fabio Capello who is unsure whom to play between the sticks in the long run. Ben Foster certainly looks to be the pill that allays Capello’s goalkeeping headache.

Ashley Young gets praised once again

by sub on February 14th, 2008 196 words | no comments
  • Digg

Aston Villa youngster Ashley Young is getting heaped with praises after an excellent season with the Midlands club. First it was his team mate John Carew who hailed the 21-year England international and now his club manager Martin O’Neill has showered him with more praises.

O’Neill says:

After a very good opening game against Newcastle, the move had taken its toll and it was a case of trying to get that confidence going after that. But the confidence is sky high now and the crowd love him. He loves taking people on and there is no doubt we are a lesser team without him. He’s a class player. The great thing about his own self-belief and self-confidence is that teams are doubling up on him and ignoring other players, but he doesn’t mind at all. He’s able to manoeuvre the ball from foot to foot and whip the ball in from a set-piece or, more importantly, from anywhere on the pitch. It’s very dangerous and he’s absolute class.

Young was signed by Martin O’Neill in January 2006 from Watford for a considerable £9.6 million but 21-year old is proving that he is worth every cent of that amount.

To Matt Sadler football comes first

by sub on January 26th, 2008 175 words | 1 comment
  • Digg

There aren’t many footballers who would like to swap the English Premier League for the Championship but Matt Sadler is not one of them. The former England youth captain is quoted by Vital Football as saying that his reasons to step down in the football pyramid was due to his desire to play more football. Sadler recently joined Watford from Birmingham City.

Sadler says:

Footballing-wise it was an easy decision because I need to play regular football, but in every other aspect of my life with my family and friends etc being here [City] it was obviously a lot more difficult.

Sadler is just 22 and has shown lots of promise and it is only a matter of time before he returns to the Premiership, Sadler might have been regular at left back for the Blues in past years but this season, he has featured in only 7 matches for Birmingham, the club that he supported as a boy. Now of course he is a Watford player and may he do well at Vicarage Road.

Fulham pin tenuous survival hopes on King

by stresster on January 18th, 2008 166 words | 1 comment
  • Digg

The Cottagers have been woefully short of firepower this season and it’s no surprise to see them snapping up Watford’s Marlon King for £5 million. Sky Sports report that the striker is keen to face Arsenal on Saturday, hopefully adding to the eleven goals he’s already scored for the Hornets this season.

When asked if he would face the title contenders, King told Sky Sports News: “I’m hoping so, I’ve just got to get myself on the training ground, get familiar with the boys and kick on from there.”

Some might say this is a slightly odd move, with Fulham and Watford likely to swap places at the end of the season. The former are five points adrift of safety in the Premier League, the latter are three points off the top of the Championship. King managed just four goals for Hornets in the top flight last season, being injured throughout the winter months, has he the quality to help keep Roy Hodgson’s men afloat?
