Portsmouth eyeing £10m Chelsea speedster: Could he fit in?

by offsidetrap on May 29th, 2008 2 comments

Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp is looking to add a bit of pace to his FA Cup-winning squad, and he’s hoping that Chelsea might in be in the mood to take a loss on their investment by selling off winger Shaun Wright-phillips for half the cost.

The Sun is reporting that Redknapp would like to bring in Wright-Phillips to Pompey for £10m, and hopes Chelsea don’t mind losing £11m for the winger after he was bought three years ago from Man City for £21m. However, judging by the way Roman Abramovich has been throwing away money recently — £2m to The Special One for a Ferrari, and £5m to make ‘Average’ Grant go away — the thought of him giving Pompey a decent price for SWP doesn’t seem too far-fetched.

Pompey boss Harry Redknapp wants to capitalise on his side’s FA Cup success by strengthening his squad. And he believes he can persuade Chelsea to take a loss on out-of-favour Wright-phillips. (The Sun)

Judging by how little Wright-Phillips was used at Chelsea, would this even be a good investment for Pompey? Or would Harry and his FA Cup be better off spending the £10m on a player that has actually done something in the past year?

Celebrate good times! Former Arsenal striker leaves BBC

by stresster on April 17th, 2008 2 comments

Here’s something to cheer everyone up. The goon that is Ian Wright has officially left the BBC, leaving us (relatively) free of inane comments during televised England and FA Cup matches. To be fair, he stuck it out for a number of years with little to no talent, struggling to put a coherent sentence together and banging on about his son, Shaun Wright-Phillips. The Daily Telegraph confirm this excellent news – now they just need to ship Lineker out.

“Times are changing,” said Wright. “I don’t know how long young people are going to want to sit down and watch that same old ‘jacket, shirt and tie’ format.”

“Fans want people who are dressed like them. They’ve got no one to relate to on TV and that’s why I’ve said to them I don’t want to do the England games any more.

“I feel like I’m just there as a comedy jester to break the ice with Alan Shearer and Alan Hansen who just do run-of-the-mill things. I can’t do that anymore. People want something different.”

Wright is now going to present Gladiators on Sky One, the very bastion of credibility. John Fashanu had the awooga shout, what will Ian Wright’s trademark be? Perhaps most viewers would prefer it if he said very little at all.

Tall transfer tales? SWP and Jermain Defoe off to St James’ Park?

by Dexter on January 18th, 2008 6 comments

The Sun, taking a few moments to pause between asking its readers to write messages of comfort to a suicidal Britney Spears and launching a “national” vote on whether Jordan’s pre or post-op mammaries are better, has brought us the gloriously tenuous rumour that both Jermain Defoe and Shaun Wright-phillips are “queueing up” to sign for Newcastle.
According to Sun scribbler Shaun Custis both men are ready to leap aboard the good ship Toon, and an insider tells us about Kevin Keegan’s training ground edict:

“It wasn’t like a big speech by the manager or anything but it sounded like he would be making a few changes.

“With only a couple of weeks left in the transfer window, he has not really got time to assess what is already there. He has to make some quick decisions.”

Were not sure about this rumour, in fact we would bet our houses on the fact that this is utter tripe.
