Zizou had carried his team and nation into the final of the World Cup with his virtuoso performances. The magician was playing in his final ever professional game and the scene was set for him to become an even bigger legend.

But deep into extra-time, Zidane took exception to an off-the-ball comment from Italy’s Marco Materazzi and opted to respond with a fierce headbutt to the chest.

What was said? Zidane (reacting to some mild shirt-pulling): “If you want my shirt, I’ll give you it later.” Materazzi: “I’d prefer your whore of a sister.”

The Frenchman was giving his marching orders and one of the game’s greatest ever players left the field for the last time in disgrace.

Football League clubs paid a total of £16.7million in agent fees last season – an increase of £4million on the previous campaign.

While the amount paid to player’s representatives have grown, the number of transactions also rose by over 500 to 2,910. Of which, fees were paid to agents in 570 of them.

Championship clubs dominated the spending, making up £14.1million of the total, with League One paying out £2.3million and League Two taking up the remainder of the total amount.

All Championship clubs paid agents fees while Hartlepool were the only club in League One not to do so.

In League Two Accrington, Barnet, Cheltenham, Crewe, Macclesfield, Stevenage and Stockport did not pay any fees, and the number of deals made without agents rose from 1,996 to 2,340.

“These figures show that a considerable amount of money continues to leave the game through payments to agents,” Football League chairman Greg Clarke said:

“This highlights the importance of the work Football League clubs are doing to establish a ‘break even’ business model across all three divisions.

“No one is trying to prevent clubs from paying agents where they feel it is appropriate, but we must make sure clubs are not spending money they simply do not have.”

The rugged France-born Congo defender was a bargain after impressing on trial, forming an effective partnership with Ryan Nelsen at centre back. Blackburn now want £15m for the Arsenal target.

49. Peter Odemwingie (Lokomotiv Moscow to West Bromwich Albion, £1m, 2010)

Was unknown before last season, but his 15 goals helped West Brom beat off their yo-yo reputation and remain in the top flight.

48. Claude Makelele (Real Madrid to Chelsea, £16.8m, 2003)

Was so good he had a position named after him. Was quite expensive but he helped turn Chelsea into a Premier League winning machine with his experience and guile.

47. Georgi Kinkladze (Dinamo Tbilisi to Manchester City, £2m, 1995)

Played only one season in England’s top flight before relegation but he lit up the Premier League with his sublime skills and dazzling goals. Would not look out of place in the current mega-rich team. Despite being in the old Division Two, he was sold to Ajax for £5m.

46. Zat Knight (Rushall Olympic to Fulham, 30 tracksuits, 1999)

Not the greatest centre-back in the league but the Cottagers made a profit when they sold him on to Aston Villa for £3.5m, which is not a bad mark-up on the 30 tracksuits that he cost Mohamed Al-Fayed, who was feeling generous.

Manchester United legend Bryan Robson was caught on camera explaining to foreign investors how to break rules over club ownership.

The 54-year-old was trapped by Channel 4′s Dispatches show brokering deals to help the money men buy two football clubs at once.

This would break Football Association and Premier League rules, with Robson instructing the investors what clubs to buy and how to get players.

The programme claims United boss Sir Alex Ferguson will help by providing players from the Red Devils academy to help boost promotion hopes.

Robson’s friend Joe Sim, chief adviser to the Thai FA claims he would arrange it all with Ferguson

“Once you have put £5million into the fund, I’ll arrange for you and me, we have dinner with Sir Alex Ferguson, then Sir Alex Ferguson will tell you that he is going to lend me the players.”

Birmingham City, Leicester City, Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday were all mentioned as possible clubs worth buying cheap and taking into the Premier League.

Robson said once the clubs were in the top flight they could be sold for hundreds of millions, making a nice profit for any investor.

Partial footage has been released from the “How to buy a football club” show with Robson’s money quote: “Football is just a business.”

The former Manchester United and England captain adds: “Build it up from nothing and say it was worth three million when you bought it and now you can sell it for £150million – that’s great business by you.”
