Everyone one loves a bit of nostalgia and the shirt the Emirates outfit will be wearing next term has it in bucketloads. The cut and the design of the Arsenal shirt, a homage to the 1971 double winning side, is simply perfection itself.
One can only hope that the Gunners can replicate the successes of the Bertie Mee side but perhaps we can end our silverware drought this term rather than hope for some of the 71 magic rub on the current crop of Gunners. There appears to be a retro vibe present in a lot of recent kit designs and it makes a change from the usual act of making the slightest little change to a shirt so as to force the purchase of the latest bit of merchandise.
Thanks to The Gunner Blog for the heads up on this latest pic.
Arsenal scored a late winner after they appeared to be heading for a draw against an off form Hull City side who were down to ten men for more than half the match.
Andrei Arshavin continued his good run of form to give the Gunners the lead but Sol Campbell was adjudged to have brought down Jan Vennegor in the box and Jimmy Bullard duly put away the spot kick with aplomb.
The Emirates side then bombarded the home side who had George Boateng sent off for an awful challenge on Bacary Sagna. Nicklas Bendtner then popped up with a crucial winner in the dying moments to further strengthen the north London sides push for the Premier League title. The Dane tucked away the winner after Boaz Myhill could only palm away a terrific 30 yard effort from Denilson.
Arsenal fought past FC Porto excellently at the Emirates to book their place in the Champions League Quarter Finals. Trailing from the first leg and without mercurial Gunners captain Cesc Fabregas many believed Arsene Wenger’s side may struggle to progress but Arsenal put in a wonderful performance to beat their Portuguese opponents.
Nicolas Bentner was the hero of the hour as he scored twice before the break. The first goal was created by Samir Nasri who’s ball evaded Andrei Arshavin but found its way to the Big Dane was there to put away an easy chance.
Bendtner added his second on 25 minutes after some great work from Andrei Arshavin who beats three Porto men before putting a brilliant cross crossing for the Arsenal striker who makes no mistake. Arsenal upped their game further in the second half to end any hopes Porto had of a comeback.
Samir Nasri and Emmanuel Eboue scored Arsenal’s third and fourth respectively within the space of a couple of minutes to hand Arsenal a excellent win at the Emirates. Nicolas Bendtner added a fifth in injury time to complete his hat-trick.
Anyone at the Emirates who thought that loaning out midfield prodigy Jack Wilshere to rough and tumble Bolton was a bad move will probably have to re-think their original assessment after this display by the 18 year old Arsenal youngster.
The teenager has been a success at the Reebok since he joined on loan in late January and he is gaining invaluable top level experience at the Trotters and now has a goal to his name and one that helped Bolton to a crucial three points at Upton Park.
The goal itself was an impressive one. After good work out wide by Kevin Davies, who clawed back the ball from the byline, Tamir Cohen eased the ball into Wilshere’s path and the Arsenal man calmly volleyed the ball past Robert Green whilst under great pressure from two oncoming West Ham defenders. It’s the England Under 21 man’s first Premier League goal and one that will Owen Coyle and Arsene Wenger will be most pleased with.
Arsenal triumphed over Burnley at the Emirates to go second in the Premier League table but did not have it all their own way against their travel sick opponents.
It wasn’t until a late goal from Andrei Arshavin near to the final whistle that the Gunners had safely claimed all three points against a Burnley side who are notoriously bad away from home. Cesc Fabregas put Arsenal ahead but David Nugent leveled early in the second half only for Theo Walcott to put the north London side back in front on the hour mark.
Andrei Arshavin settled Arsenal’s nerves scored a third at the death. Less pleasing for the Emirates side was the injury sustained by captain Cesc Fabregas soon after he had scored. The last thing Arsene Wenger needs as he looks to push on with a title chase is to lose his mercurial skipper for any lengthy period of the time.
