Chelsea play hosts to Manchester United on Sunday hoping to gain revenge for their 3-1 defeat at Old Trafford earlier this season but go into the game, but have won only two of their last eight games, culminating in their fortunate 1-1 draw with Swansea on Tuesday night.

The other potential firecracker comes courtesy of Tottenham’s trip to Anfield to take on a Liverpool side who have accounted for the two sides above Spurs in the league, Manchester City and Manchester United, in recent weeks in cup competitions.

A win against Wolves moved the Reds up to 6th in the league, and with Luis Suarez set to return to action following the completion of his eight match ban they will remain hopeful of stopping Spurs from keeping pace with the two Manchester clubs in the title race.

While their title rivals face tough battle against rival sides in the top six, Manchester City will hope for a more comfortable afternoon against Fulham. Their shock 1-0 defeat against Everton on Tuesday meant United were able to pull level with them at the top of the table, and Roberto Mancini will certainly be looking for a marked improvement from his side on Saturday.

Newcastle have been perhaps the surprise package this season and currently sit in 5th place ahead of Liverpool and Arsenal thanks to a 2-0 win over Blackburn on Wednesday, and can further extend their top six challenge with a win over Aston Villa on Sunday.

Alan Pardew’s side should welcome back top scorer Demba Ba and new signing Papiss Demba Cisse who have been away on international duty, but Yohan Cabaye will miss out following his appeal against a three game suspension for stamping during the Toon’s 1-0 defeat against Brighton in the F.A Cup.

Elsewhere in Saturday’s action Sunderland have the chance to continue their rich vein of form against a Stoke side fresh off an insipid defeat against Manchester United.

Wayne Bridge and Sotirios Kyrgiakos could make his debut having signed for the Black Cats in the January transfer window.

Arsenal will have to be wary when they take on Blackburn at the Emirates after Steve Kean’s side beat Manchester United at Old Trafford last month while also piling on the misery during the Gunners early season slump, recording a memorable 4-3 win at Ewood Park back in September.

In Saturday’s remaining fixtures Wigan play hosts to Everton who will still be flying after their win over Man City, West Brom go up against Swansea at the Hawthorns, QPR welcome Wolves to Loftus Road and Norwich will look to recover immediately from their 3-0 defeat against Sunderland on Wednesday with a win over Bolton.
