Strachan Takes A Swipe At The Premiership

Digsy and Gordon don’t see eye to eye over the SPL, and not just because Digsy is above five feet tall.

Wee Gordon Strachan had some harsh words for the Premiership before tonight’s big Celtic vs Manchester United Champions League qualifier. Harsh, unrealistic words.

“Believe me, I’ve seen some dire games in England. You keep giving yourselves too many pats on the back, saying you have the best league in the world.

“I know our league is not the same as the Premiership, but there is not that much difference.

“And if this Celtic side was in the Premiership we would be competitive in the top half of the table.”

Maybe he was just bringing up the ol’ Old Firm in the Premiership debate to gee his Bhoys up (see what I did there) or maybe he really believes what he’s saying.

But where to start? Kenny Miller was a decent Coca-Cola Championship striker, and now he’s your best hope of a goal Gordon. And if there’s really not much difference then how come a man who was relegated from the Premiership can go North and win a league and cup double in his first season without even having a proper defence? The quality of their squad is much closer to Reading and Watford than it is to Tottenham, West Ham, Wigan, Blackburn, Bolton, Portsmouth or Everton who should be in that Premiership top half this season.

Celtic might be able to raise their game for two glamour ties against Manchester United, but if they had to play proper teams every week instead of Kilmarnock, St. Mirren and Dundee United then Strachan’s team would require some serious additions to compete in the Premiership.
