Ref Mark Clattenburg incurred the wrath of Blackburn manager Mark Hughes on Saturday. Firstly, he made a number of controversial decisions during Rovers’ 5-3 defeat at Wigan Athletic, including the dismissal of Brett Emerton. Then, after the match, the referee made his way home for Strictly Come Dancing, rather than make himself available for further discussion.
Hughes said: “We tried to get in to see him but he is refusing to speak to my assistant manager. I thought we were allowed to speak to the referee 30 minutes after the game but he said he was going home.
“We’ve sat down before to discuss incidents and their thinking on it, to try to take a considered view. But if you don’t get the opportunity it doesn’t help the relationship between managers and refs. He should at least do us the courtesy of explaining his decisions.”
The Rovers boss must be scratching his head after yet another sorry defensive display from his team. Eleven goals conceded in the past four matches would have been unthinkable after Blackburn’s solid start to the season. And Arsenal are up next in the Carling Cup on Tuesday.
