According to the Daily Telegraph, Liverpool are in grave danger of losing one of their best players to date this season. Defensive midfielder Javier Mascherano has admitted that the uncertainty surrounding the club’s finances means it’s likelier that he’ll leave in the summer, with Barcelona the hot favourites to take advantage.
“With the time that has passed, it’ll now be more difficult for me to stay here because I need to do something about my future,” said Mascherano.
“I have done everything to stay but now the owners must decide if they want to buy me or not.”
If the Argentine departs Anfield, it would certainly represent a backward step as far as manager Rafael Benitez is concerned. It is thought Mascherano can be acquired for £17million, money that isn’t necessarily going to be available due to Liverpool’s American owners having to refinance their loans used to buy the club.
