Liverpool fell further behind in the title race on Sunday after failing to convert any number of chances against Manchester City. The gap between them and league leaders Arsenal is now thirteen points, causing Reds manager Rafael Benitez to take the unusual step in declaring tonight’s match against Wigan as ‘must-win’. The Daily Telegraph report that a failure to take all three points from tonight’s game could lead to the Spaniard exiting Anfield.
“If you look at the City game then it is clear that we were the better side,” he said.
“After the first 15 minutes we controlled the game, played really well and created lots of opportunities and I’m sure that if we play like that again tonight then we will win.
“It is important that we do win also because if we are to stay near to the top of the table then we must win these games.”
Steve Bruce arrives at Anfield this evening with an unbeaten record at Liverpool as a manager. He guided Birmingham to a goalless draw against the Reds earlier this season and is boosted by the return of former Pool striker Emile Heskey.
