UPDATE: Barton has now been granted bail and is free to terrorise the nation’s children once more.
The BBC report that Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton has been refused bail by Liverpool magistrates and has been remanded in custody.
The player is charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and affray following an incident in the city’s Church Street area.
The 25-year-old, who appeared via videolink from prison, was refused bail and is due back in court on 16 January.
Barton was signed from Manchester City in the summer for a fee of £5.8 million but has only featured in ten matches for the Magpies so far. Quite whether he’ll play again for Newcastle is open to question but it’s certain that he’ll now miss Newcastle’s forthcoming matches against Stoke City in the FA Cup and Manchester United in the Premier League.
