Derby County have signed 25-year old Argentine striker Emanuel Villa from Mexican side UAG Tecos, according to County’s official website. Villa has signed a three-and-a-half year contract with the Rams, who face a wait on international clearance for their new striker, who holds an EU passport. He is Paul Jewell’s first signing.
How big of a deal is Villa? He has not been capped, but that doesn’t mean he should be written off, as competition for striker spots is particularly fierce with the albiceleste. He has produced a steady stream of goals for his Mexican league employers; 15 in 30 games for Atlas in 2006 and 13 in 33 games for Tecos last year, according to Villa’s Wikipedia entry. Derby clearly need help in that area; Jewell’s side have produced a grand total of 10 goals in 21 Premier League games this season.
Is Villa enough to rescue the Rams from their relegation death spiral? Or is it too little, too late?
