African footballers all over the world will be packing their bags in the next few days and flying out to Ghana to compete in the African Nations Cup. This competition could have a direct bearing on the outcome of the Premier League, with the likes of Portsmouth and Chelsea set to be especially depleted by the departure of several players. According to the ITV website, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger thinks the Blues will be hit hardest.
“I believe it will be Chelsea who suffers the most, though on the other had they can buy more can anyone else to correct that,” reflected the 58-year-old.
“But losing Mikel, Essien, Drogba and Kalou, that’s four main players. Nobody loses that many.
“We are just behind Chelsea and Portsmouth also – but I won’t use it as an excuse if we don’t win the title because I have known who we will lose since the start of the season. If they were injured, I wouldn’t complain.”
Anyone expecting Chelsea to make a similar statement may be waiting a long time! Surely it will be a matter of days before Avram Grant bemoans the competition severely disrupting his team’s season, especially with Didier Drogba just back from injury, only to be now heading out to Ghana.
