“A horse, a horse! My kingdom for a horse!” Panic stricken Chelsea boss Avram Grant needs an all-action gallopping stallion of a striker to fill the massive Didier Drogba sized hole in his team, and Nic Anelka is the man to do it. And with Chelsea looking disconsolately at their massive missing and injured striker list which includes Drogba, Kalou, and Schevchenko, Bolton could play hard to get. The Daily Mail reckons that:
“Bolton are clearly in a strong negotiating position, with days slipping by in the January window and few alternatives available.
“Chelsea remain confident they will get France striker Anelka, 28, but can expect Bolton to play it tough over money in an effort to force the price up to more than £15m, almost twice the sum they paid Fenerbahce 18 months ago.
“Anelka would be available for the latter stages of the Carling Cup, Champions League and FA Cup but Chelsea would like to sign him before Saturday’s Barclays Premier League derby against Tottenham.”
And with Bolton holding out for the £15m the only thing that will hurry them into accepting a lesser deal is the appearance of Djibril Cisse on the horizon who for some inexplicable reason is desperate to return to the north west of England. £15m for Anelka, money well spent?
