The Berbatov saga appears to not so much as hit the headlines daily as stick to the front page all the time with no signs of ever moving. The will-he-won’t-he circus that has mushroomed around the Tottenham Hotspur striker is firmly planted in the centre of the English Premier League transfer market this month.
Dimita Berbatov’s agent has admitted that the player is looking for a move to a club that matches his ambition, the player himself has tried to calm down speculations over his immediate future at White Hart Lane, the club has lashed out an immense transfer fee on the player and manager Juande Ramos is looking not so certain that he can hold onto the player for long. And now the other players have started voicing their concern.
In an interview to Sky Sports, Spurs captain Ledley King made it clear that the club will do all it can to convince the Bulgarian international striker to remain in North London. King admits that Berbatov is a pivotal piece in the Tottenham jigsaw and that it is vital for the club to hold onto the player.
This is what he said:
It’s no surprise he is being linked away but we want to keep hold of our best player. If we want to be moving in the right direction, we need to hold on to him, it’s as simple as that.
But would indeed Spurs be able to cling onto their most prized asset? Manchester United have been linked with the player and a few clubs from mainland Europe too are ready to throw their hat into the mix. Spurs would possibly be able to retain Dimitar Berbatov till the end of the season but with Spurs unable to clinch a European place, it would be hugely tough for the club to keep him for next season.
