Newcastle manager may be keen to have Joey Barton playing again as quickly as possible, but The Guardian report that the former Manchester City midfielder will be on the sidelines for a good while yet. Barton has checked into the Sporting Chance clinic following his release from prison and his therapist Peter Kay is at pains to point out the player is going nowhere near a football right now.
“Until the 16th of January, Joey will be with me 24 hours a day,” said Kay. “As for him playing, it will not be happening in the near future. There are bail guidelines we are adhering to and we’re concentrating on the work we need to do, which is going well.”
“We do not play keepy-uppy in the garden; we do work of a different nature,” he said. “We are getting on with the work we need to do, which is separate from football, and I could not hope for anything better than what is happening.”
Looks like Allardyce is stuck with the ‘formidable duo’ that are Nicky Butt and Alan Smith unless he signs new players for the central midfield berths. Will Barton return to the Magpies squad like a new man or just a man possessed as usual?
