Derby’s Savage ‘would have kept Sunderland up’

You can accuse new Derby signing Robbie Savage of being many things, but a wallflower is not one of them. Indeed, listening to his latest comments according to The Press Association, it’s amazing that Blackburn have agreed to sell the Welsh midfielder, given how highly he rates himself.

It’s clear that Derby and Sunderland were the two clubs tussling for the former Crewe and Leicester player’s signature, with the Rams apparently showing more enthusiasm to sign him. Which is bad news for the Black Cats as it appears that they’re almost certain to be relegated now that they’ve missed out.

He said: “The chairman and manager wanted me more than any other club and that means a lot to me.

“It’s well known Sunderland put in a bid for me but I never really felt they were too keen. If I was them, I would have gone the whole hog to get me because I’m the type of player who can keep a team in the Premier League.”

He added: “But after speaking to Paul and the chairman I knew Derby wanted me more. I’m excited about the challenge and I’m looking forward to my long-term future here.”

I’m amazed that Savage hasn’t already predicted that County will stay up this season, on account of him being at the club! Nevertheless, Paul Jewell clearly means business during the January transfer window and the Rams are likely to be favourites to win next season’s Championship.
