Stewart Downing has been linked with a move to Spurs for many seasons, and it now appears as though the Middlesbrough winger is close to packing his bags for White Hart Lane. The Daily Telegraph report that the England international is waiting for the two clubs to agree on a fee (thought to be in the region of £12 million) which will continue Tottenham’s policy of recruiting young English talent.
“I am aware and flattered by the interest from Tottenham,” Downing said. “But until Middlesbrough and Tottenham agree terms I remain a Middlesborough player and am fully committed to helping Gareth Southgate and the team anyway I can.
“I hope this situation is resolved sooner rather than later as all the speculation is affecting me and I would like to drawn a line under the situation and focus fully on my football career.”
Hardly the show of commitment that Boro fans were looking for! Middlesbrough appear to have become a selling club more than ever this season, although more because their players (Yakubu, Viduka, Downing) want to leave rather than because of their financial situation.
