After shamelessly flirting with Newcastle United before turning them down, Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp believes that the north-east club should hire Alan Shearer to be the next man in the hotseat at St James’ Park. In today’s Daily Mail, the Pompey gaffer says management experience shouldn’t stop Mike Ashley and Chris Mort from bringing in the Magpies legend.
Portsmouth boss Redknapp, speaking after his side’s 2-0 defeat at Sunderland, said: “I’d give it to Alan. He is perfect for it. It doesn’t matter that he doesn’t have the experience. He understands football.
“We’re kidding ourselves that experience is needed. Roy Keane has no experience but he knows what he’s doing. I listen to him, I watch him and there’s only one place he’s going and that is to the top. I don’t see why Alan can’t do it.
“When Sam went, I thought it would be Shearer. He would set the place alight. The fans would love it.”
The question remains as to whether Shearer would want to sacrifice his legendary status on Tyneside (not to mention his cushy number on Match of the Day) to endure the stress of managing a club with such high expectations from the board and fans. At the time of writing, Blackburn boss Mark Hughes is favourite to succeed Sam Allardyce instead.
