Despite Wednesday’s match between Manchester City and West Ham being a veritable dullfest, there were one or two bright individual performances, including that of goalscorer Elano. The Manchester Evening News report that Sven-Goran Eriksson is once again happy with his Brazilian playmaker, who started the season with a bang before a string of sub-standard performances in the past couple of months.
Eriksson said: “It is not every day that he scores with his head. It was very good to see him coming back to his normal standard.
“He has been a little bit below par for a while, but now he’s back.
“We haven’t seen the real Elano since October, when he went away with his national team. Twice he has been injured, and he had not been training regularly. But now he has been training well for some weeks.”
However, one player does not a team maketh and fans might be concerned by the persistent lack of striking options every week. Once again, Darius Vassell was employed in an ineffective lone forward role, before Rolando Bianchi joined him at half-time to give the team a better balance. Is this a team capable of still finishing in the UEFA Cup places?
