Poor old Stewart Downing. Just when he thought that he would make a move away from the dampened Riverside, his employers have clogged him down. Sky Sports reports that the young England international has been told by his club Middlesbrough that he wouldn’t be allowed to leave this month.
Boro manager Gareth Southgate says:
Stewart is not for sale, both myself and the chairman Steve Gibson told him that. He is a very important player for us. Stewart met with the chairman on Thursday and is probably letting it all sink in. January is an unsettling period for many players. Some think they are on their way when they aren’t and some want to be on their way and end up staying. As far as we are concerned with Stewart, it is dead.
The 23-year old left winger was heavily tipped to join Tottenham Hotspur this month but talks between the two Premiership clubs fell down at the last moment. So Downing has to stick with Boro until the end of the season at least but you can well discern that the Middlesbrough fans would be closely monitoring his commitment and dedication to the club till that time.
