Aston Villa defender Olof Mellberg might be moving off to the envious pastures of Turin and Juventus at the end of the season – but the 30-year old Swedish international’s current commitment to the Midlands club is as fierce as ever.
Goal.com quotes the rock in the centre of Villa’s defence as saying that although he has signed a pre-contract with Juve for a summer move, he isn’t going to let manager Martin O’Neill down over the remainder of the season. O’Neill’s side are a in a great position to qualify for the UEFA Cup next season and Mellberg is eager to push them there, saying:
”I have 14 cup finals to play – and I’m looking forward to them. I felt it was time for a new challenge but my total focus now is my performances for Villa. It would be great to have a good last season and wouldn’t it be fantastic to take Villa into Europe? That’s my aim and my total focus. It would be fantastic to help Villa into Europe. I have always wanted to do that. The achievement would be fantastic, particularly with the Premier League being as strong as ever. It is great to have everything sorted out as regards the future. Everyone knows now what is happening. Now it’s total commitment for Villa on the pitch. There are big games coming up and hopefully we can finish on a high.”
Fantastic professional, Mellberg. May his wish to see modest Aston Villa through to the UEFA Cup come true.
