Is David James England’s number 1?

England might have a great backline but everyone confesses that they lack a world class goalkeeper. Fabio Capello might be mute on this issue but the newly appointed England head coach must certainly be thinking about this matter.

And if he takes Joe Jordan’s advice, then he would have to look no further than Portsmouth’s David James. Pompey’s coach is quoted by Team Talk as saying that although James conceded two goals against Manchester United in the English premier League on Wednesday, he is better than the other England custodians available at the moment.

Joe Jordan says:

I cannot speak about what he was like before he came to us, but he has been very consistent in his time here. David is different class. We believe he is the best British goalkeeper around.

So will James be in goal when England take on Switzerland in early February in an international friendly?
