Javier Mascherano has been giving Stewart Downing a run for his money when it comes to column inches devoted to each player’s respective future. However, the Liverpool midfielder finally looks set to put pen to paper by the end of this week, thus bringing to end speculation linking him with a move to Spain or Italy. The Daily Telegraph report that the 23-year-old Argentinian is confident of it finally happening, quoting him as saying:
“It’s not finished yet but I am hoping to stay here. I have a lot of confidence that after the next week I will be able to say ‘everything is right and I am staying here in Liverpool’.
“We now need to wait. We are very close but we need to talk again. I think everything will be OK. I’ve waited a long time, so I can wait one week more.
“The fans like me and I love the fans. They are great and that’s the reason I want to stay here.”
It is thought that Momo Sissoko’s departure to Juventus has freed up some of the necessary funds required for Liverpool to sign Mascherano. You may be thinking ”the transfer window has closed” but as the player is on a long-term loan from owners MSI, the deal did not need to be completed by Thursday.
With Steven Gerrard playing alongside the South American in central midfield, this is one area where Liverpool are as strong as any other team in the Premier League.
