Chris Hughton was appointed the assitant manager of Newcastle United only on Monday to encourage the current bunch of players who have failed to win any match under new manager Kevin Keegan. Like his boss, Hughton too has made safety this season the club’s first priority but insists that they would start building from next season.
Our first priority this season is to achieve safety and then we can build for next season during the summer.
The standard of the Premier League is so high – the teams in the bottom half of the table are also so strong and everybody is fighting for survival.
Of course with Kevin coming in everybody is expecting additions will come in to strengthen what we already have, and then we go from there.
That’s a fair enough point. But how much Newcastle can build in the next season remains a matter of dispute. The most likely ambition for the Geordies next season would be to try and secure a UEFA Cup berth for themselves. And please, no UEFA Champions League hopes for now!
