It seems as though Frank Lampard has been linked with a move away from Chelsea on a number of occasions in the past few seasons. However, it’s generally been idle speculation after the midfielder has delivered a fine performance for his team or been spotted having a holiday in Spain.
This time might be different, according to the Daily Telegraph. It’s clear that talks regarding a new contract have stalled badly, with the England international in the dark about his future at Stamford Bridge.
“To be honest, I’ve been approached by the club a few times saying they’re going to come to me with something and they haven’t,” he said. “That’s saying they’re going to wait until the summer, so I don’t really know what that means.”
“I’d like it sorted,” Lampard said. “Like I said before, it’s dragged on this season and that’s not an ideal thing for me. The club are saying they want to wait until the summer, so I’ll have to wait for the summer.
“We’ll wait and see. I said at the beginning of the season I don’t want to talk about the contract and that was me personally, because I wanted to concentrate on my football. They have made contact this season, but it hasn’t been followed up with any news. They’ve said something’s going to happen. If we wait to the summer and nothing happens then I’ve got a year left, which is not a position I want to be in. I’ve made it very clear I want to be here and I want to know what’s going on, basically.”
It’s indeed unusual to see a player bleating to the press about his situation, unless your name is Didier Drogba, in which case dirty linen is hung out on a regular basis. Is Lamps using the press as a tool to engineer a shiny new contract and will the board budge or just let him go?
