Arsenal’s title challenge has been seriously derailed in recent weeks after four successive league draws followed by a defeat at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. They now face a crucial set of fixtures over the next three weeks, including three matches against Liverpool, and Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson expects this trio of hard-fought battles to be the final nail in the coffin as far as the Gunners’ title charge is concerned. The Daily Star report that the Scot views Chelsea as the one and only threat to the Red Devils retaining their title crown.
Ferguson said: “I think Chelsea are the main threat now, especially as the three games Arsenal have against Liverpool will be difficult.
“Three games against each other in 10 days – that will prove difficult physically and mentally for both teams.
“All I know is, we are where we are and Arsenal have these great games coming up against Liverpool.
“They know all about each other and I don’t think there’ll be much in it. I’m going to go to that match on Wednesday, the day after ours. It should be a fantastic game.
“Chelsea, to my mind, have the easier Champions League draw against Fenerbahce so, physically, with their squad, it puts them in a better position than Arsenal.”
With the Gunners still to visit Old Trafford in the Premier League, it’s likely that they’re now more likely to win the Champions League, despite a very tough draw against Liverpool. Would Arsenal fans accept defeat to the Merseyside club in the league, this effectively ending their title dreams, if it meant they were to go through and play Chelsea or Fenerbahce in the semi-finals of the European Cup?
