Everton have hit back at Rafa’s claims that Stevie G did well to rise above the torrent of rancid abuse directed at him from the Toffees fans on Sunday by issuing their own allegations, claiming that both Phil Neville and Joleon Lescott were abused. An Everton statement read:
“It is a shame that Mr Benitez chose to ignore the actions of his own club’s supporters. Not only was Joleon Lescott subjected to an afternoon-long barrage of disgusting and quite audible abuse, Phil Neville was seemingly spat at several times and also punched in the back by a supporter as he took a throw-in.”
What is certain is that this year’s Merseyside derby encounters have ratcheted the rivalry up a notch and the tit for tat bickering from the two clubs about alleged verbal abuse has just made things even more tense.
