A move to Fratton Park for former Spurs bench-warmer Jermain Defoe seems to have paid off so far. Eight goals in seven games have helped make him an instant hero at Portsmouth, however the anguish of his time trying to get a regular starting spot at White Hart Lane still seems to haunt him!
Portsmouth striker Jermain Defoe has spoke of his frustration at former club Tottenham.
He said: “There were times after games where I was sitting in my car and I had to stop myself from crying because I just wanted to play.” (various)
It will be interesting in years to come to see how Defoe’s time at Tottenham will be judged. In simple goal-scoring terms I don’t think anyone can argue about his stats, 64 goals in 110 starts (plus 60+ sub appearances) is a pretty good ratio. Clearly BMJ and JR just didn’t see him as part of the club’s overall plans, which when you consider just how many goals the club manages to score without him seems a fairly decent decision.
It will be interesting to see where Jermain’s career takes him from here, still just 25 with 130+ goals to his name, will he be happy to stay at the relatively small south coast club or after a year or two will he be itching for a move? The inevitable question is, two or three years from now will it be Darren Bent sitting in his expensive sports car weeping!
