Much vaunted youngster Fran Merida, apparently a real star in the making, has put pen to paper on an extension to his current deal which should scare of the vultures!
Wenger said of Merida’s decision to put pen to paper : “Yes we have extended his contract, That was planned and it is good news because he is a very fine player. He is one for the future.
“The reports I have from [his loan spell in] Spain are that he does well everytime he plays. Fran is very technical. He still needs to grow physically but football-wise there is no problem. He is an absolutely amazing player.” (Arsenal TV Online)
How does he do it? How exactly does Wenger manage to consistently pick up and forage for young talents and turn them, more often than not, into the finished article? One thing is for sure the Arsenal board must love Wenger. Not only does he manage to essentially avoid the bulk of big money signings by getting the talent fresh from the vine (not literally like human tomatoes) but he also manages to consolidate this financial saving by maintaining a strict wage structure that pretty much saves them a mint in wages.
I think Arsene’s talents are the kind of talents that spell a bright future for the club and is in many ways a refreshing contrast to the boom and bust philosophy that could in years to come lead to sides like Chelsea to struggle, I mean how many years can a side freely pay 20m plus for players and pay them 100k a week wages, surely sooner or later the money will run dry or the cash rich owner will get bored? Well done Wenger! And I am not even an Arsenal fan!
