How would Fernando Torres look in an Arsenal shirt? That’s the question that Gooners might be asking after the Spaniard revealed that the North London club made an offer for him a few years ago. At the tender age of 18, El Nino was starting to demonstrate his almighty potential by top scoring for Spain in the Euro Under-19 Championships and the Liverpool Echo reveal that the Gunners were knocking on the door for the starlet.
“That’s when offers started to come in,” he recalls. “For example, there was one from Arsenal.”
Sadly, he doesn’t reveal the other clubs that were sniffing around at the time, although it’s fair to say the usual ‘Spanish and Italian giants’ of football were probably in the hunt. Indeed, Torres remained loyal to boyhood club Atletico Madrid for many seasons, longer than many anticipated. It appears that he’s happy with the decision to move to Anfield.
“When I hear the fans sing the song they have for me it gives me a great feeling,” he said.
“It seems like it is getting louder all the time and as a player it is really good to know you are supported this way.
“Hopefully tonight we will repay their support by getting the result the fans want.”
