It seems that all’s well that ends well at Fratton Park and St James’ Park this season. The loyalist that is Harry Redknapp appeared to be on the verge of becoming Newcastle United’s new manager a few months ago, before eventually deciding to stay put and guide Portsmouth to the FA Cup final instead. Meanwhile, the Magpies turned to the messiah that is Kevin Keegan after being snubbed by ‘Arry, who has eventually managed to lift them out of the doldrums.
Sky Sports report that Redknapp is chuffed with his decision to stay put on the south coast, although with talk of private helicopter and the like, he would probably have commuted to the north-east every other day anyway!
“I’ve certainly got no regrets about my decision,” Redknapp said.
“If somebody had upset me here it might have been different.
“But I knew we had a tremendous squad at Portsmouth, a great place to come in and work, great fans. People were happy with me and I was happy with them.
“Now we are in an FA Cup final and chasing a possible fifth place in the table. If those two things come about I can’t honestly say that next season or even beyond I can make it much better than that.
“To get to fifth and win the FA Cup. It would be very hard to beat next season. And if we finish up with that then I think I had probably better retire.”
Pompey fans will hope that their manager is only joking. Upon taking over, he had a job and a half to keep them in the Premier League. Since then, they have made significant progress, with their away form particularly impressive this season. The fact that they’ve got to the FA Cup final without a decent striker is not bad either!
