It’s just a shame for Arsenal fans that Arsene Wenger is talking about their technical ability rather than the points they’ve accrued at this stage of the season. The Daily Record report that the Gunners manager is suffering after a week in which he saw any chance of winning silverware blown out of the water after defeats at Anfield and Old Trafford. However, is he right to claim that his team are as good as the top two who are left fighting it out for domestic honours?
He said: “We do not feel there is much between ourselves, United and Chelsea when it comes to technical ability and quality, so it is difficult to accept we will not win the title.
“On the other hand I feel we have done a lot for the Premier League this season by the way we have promoted it.
“We will continue to play the way we do, but better. Then the trophies will come.
“Right now our confidence has dropped a little bit. When you get knock after knock it is difficult to take. But I cannot fault the team spirit – it has been exceptional.
“I am very proud of my side’s performance today. We had to be exceptionally strong after the Liverpool game – and we were.”
It’s impossible to disagree with Mr Wenger regarding the question of ability, especially for anyone watching them carve open the champions defence time and again on Sunday. If Adebayor had been wearing his shooting boots, they could have been out of sight before William Gallas handled in the penalty area. Would anyone disagree with the statement that Arsenal are more of a complete team than Manchester United and Chelsea, who both rely too much on certain individual players rather than the group dynamic?
