For those of us that play fantasy football, picking a Newcastle United defender in the past few seasons would not only see eyebrows raised from your peers, but also questions along the lines of ‘have you been smoking the crack pipe again?’. However, this could be all about to change, if this latest report is correct.
The Daily Mail claim that Kevin Keegan has realised that his defence is a bit shabby and is close to landing a certain Fabricio Coloccini from Deportivo La Coruna for a princely sum of £7.8 million. According to the player’s agent, the bid has been lodged by Newcastle and it’s now down to whether the Spanish club are prepared to accept the Tyneside club’s offer.
“The only offer I am dealing with is that of Newcastle,” Lombilla told Spanish sports daily AS. “Which is the one that I brought about.”
Depor coach Miguel Angel Lotina knows it will be a blow to lose the 26-year-old.
“If Coloccini goes it will be the great disappointment of the summer,” he told Marca. “The team that takes Coloccini will be getting a quality footballer, a footballer to take your hat off to and they will be playing a dirty trick on me.
“He is a tremendous footballer for what he gives on the pitch and in the dressing room.”
A glowing report indeed from Coloccini’s current manager, Magpies fans will be hoping that he firms things up at the back, despite the Kevin Keegan mantra of scoring one more than the opposition. With Steven Taylor accompanying him in central defence and Shay Given in goal, could we be experiencing that rare sight of a United clean sheet more often next term?
