Middlesbrough winger admits a move could be on the cards: Relax Liverpool fans Downing is going nowhere!

Gareth Southgate doesn’t have a particularly big squad at his disposal, and he could be one player lighter by the sounds of it. It’s refreshing to hear of a young player wanting to have first-team football every week, someone who’s not prepared to bide his time on the bench every week waiting for an opportunity.

Setanta report that Adam Johnson feels pretty unlucky that he’s being kept out of the side by Stuart Downing and Jeremie Aliadiere, will his reserve team status mean that a move is on the cards?

“It is like buses, you wait 20 years for a left winger and then two turn up at once,” Johnson said in The Middlesbrough Gazette.

“I must be one of the most unfortunate people in football in that respect.

“It is very frustrating sat on the bench week in, week out watching games. I am 21 now and I need to be doing something. I want to play.

“It’s no secret. The manager knows that and we’ve had a few chats in pre-season about my position and a lot of things have been mentioned like transfers and loans.

“I want to be a Boro player, there’s no doubt about that. I think we are on the verge of big things here.

“It is nice to be involved in such attacking play. Hopefully against Yeovil I showed the manager what I can do.

“My preference is to stay here but you never know in football. We have a small squad and hopefully I am next in line to get a chance but I can’t wait forever.”

Johnson has already enjoyed loan spells at Leeds and Watford, although it doesn’t sound like he wants to be shipped anywhere else, even if there are bound to be plenty of takers. Boro fans, do you think the manager should give him more first-team opportunities or is the side looking good without him?
