This Aston Villa man was, of course, hoping for a move to Anfield but now this source suggests he will be heading for Stamford Bridge in January!
Chelsea have reignited their interest in Gareth Barry and are ready to bid for the Aston Villa midfielder in January.
Boss Luiz Felipe Scolari is desperate to replace injury casualty Michael Essien and has offered a short-team deal to his fellow international midfielder Stephen Appiah.
But England man Barry is the Chelsea manager’s preferred long-term target and Scolari knows Villa could be open to an offer in the next transfer window.
Scolari’s priority is a replacement for Essien, who is likely to be ruled out for the entire season with a cruciate knee-ligament injury.
And Barry, who has refused to discuss a new contract with Villa after his aborted move to Liverpool, would be available for £18million. (The People)
Whilst the loss of Essien is a huge blow to the west London outfit, they can surely ably cope with the loss with the midfielders currently on the club’s books rather than making a huge move in the next transfer window. Even a move for Appiah would appear to be a better bet but the club can still count on the likes of Obi Mikel to fill the void if necessary.
Gareth Barry is a quality player and I am not suggesting that he wouldn’t be a good addition. I am just questioning the need for the table-topping side to spend big to replace the excellent Ghanaian. Do Chelsea fans think such a move for Barry makes sense?
