On Monday Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson admitted that when Aiden McGeady was a teenager, he attempted to sign the Republic of Ireland international winger. And yesterday it was someone else’s turn.
Villarreal defensive midfielder Marcos Senna has revealed that two years ago, in the summer of 2006, the Red Devils came calling for his signature. At the time, the naturalized Spanish international had just accomplished a marvelous season with the Yellow Submarine before Premier League giants United entered the picture.
“I came very, very close to signing. Sir Alex Ferguson talked to my agent and everything was done — then they suddenly signed Carrick.”
Well, it wasn’t as sudden as Senna makes it out to be. Villarreal wanted no less than 10 million euros for the then 30-year-old but Man United were prepared to pay only 3 million.
I guess we’re about to find out if he’s really worth 10 million euros or not would as Villarreal take on Man United in the UEFA Champions League at Old Trafford tonight.
