Imagine if Cristiano Ronaldo had deliberately missed his spot kick on Saturday afternoon. He would have incurred the wrath of the home supporters, not to mention his team-mates and of course Sir Alex Ferguson, who would probably have wrung his neck by the final whistle. However, perhaps it would have been the fairest thing to do under the circumstances, with not a single Red Devils player believing it was a penalty at the time.
The Times reports that Ronaldo, Tevez and Fletcher all believed that Rob Styles was wrong to award their team a spot kick at the time. Kevin Nolan has revealed that the decision is continuing to cause consternation among the Bolton ranks, with an apology supposedly forthcoming from the referee.
“Ronaldo was on the floor saying, ‘I didn’t want a penalty!’,” Nolan said. “I don’t think one of them put their hands up asking for a penalty. [Darren] Fletcher’s going, ‘It’s not a penalty’, [Carlos] Tevez is going, ‘It’s not a penalty’. Twenty players who were in the box at the time knew it wasn’t a penalty. But the man who was in black had the final say. They couldn’t believe their luck. But you’re at United and unfortunately that happens.
“It does strike fear into you when you look at this magnificent stadium. Maybe that’s what’s happened to the referee. He said he thought Jlloyd took Ronaldo before the ball. It didn’t make sense to me at all.”
Indeed, it’s hard to imagine that Bolton or any other team would find themselves in the same position at Old Trafford, is this just something that ‘smaller’ teams should learn to accept or should something be done about this bias towards the bigger clubs? Is it pie in the sky to question whether Ronaldo should have deliberately missed? He did look sheepish after scoring past Jussi Jaaskelainen! What do you reckon United fans?
