Manchester United striker slammed for being ‘poisonous’ at Tottenham: Do you agree?

While Robbie Keane might get a decent round of applause upon his return to White Hart Lane, it’s difficult to imagine the same reception for his former partner in crime. Tottenham are rock bottom of the Premier League and, while the Irishman’s move to Liverpool was done quickly and gave the club a chance to consider a replacement, the same couldn’t be said for a certain Bulgarian forward.

Therefore, while Manchester United have a bolstered strikeforce on account of Dimitar Berbatov on the books, Spurs are in the doldrums, and Terry Venables is laying the blame squarely at the feet of the Red Devils striker. The Guardian reports that El Tel is scathing in his verbal attack on Berba, it will be interesting to see how the player responds.

“Berbatov kept telling us he had ‘a dream’,” Venables told The Sun. “Well, good for you Dimi. You had a dream with a few extra noughts added to your bank balance. But did Spurs have a dream too? You got your way but your poisonous presence at the start of the season – the brooding and the reluctance to play – has cost the club that believed in you.”

Indeed, Berbatov’s attitude was inexcusable. He should have been willing to play, irrespective of whether he was seeking a move away from the club or not. While his team-mates may have denied that the situation affected matters on the pitch, there is no escaping that he has cost his former club dear as they attempt to kickstart their season. Is Venables right to lay into the former Tottenham man?
