NEWCASTLE fear Michael Owen will not be able to resist a £2million cut-price January return to Liverpool.
The former Kop hero is weighing up his options as he enters the last six months of his St James’ Park contract.
Liverpool are doing no more than monitoring his position at this stage. But as the Merseysiders look to bolster their attack after a succession of worrying hamstring injuries to Fernando Torres, the emotional lure could tug Owen back.
The main question is whether Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is fully convinced the 27-year-old is the answer as he seeks to maintain his New Year title surge.
Benitez is considering several alternatives, including another ex-Reds striker, Emile Heskey.
He can be sure the money would be made available to bring Owen back to Liverpool and may see it as risk worth taking. (News of the World)

Now this is an interesting ongoing transfer rumour that is beginning to gain some more momentum. Michael Owen seems dead set to leave Newcastle for a new challenge and given the relatively small fee involved should the England man leave in January it seems there are many interested parties who believe the former hotshot still has the ability to recapture some of the form that made him one of the most feared predatory finishers on the planet a few years back. Liverpool could do with another striker, not least because of Torres’s ongoing injury concerns but also to take some of the burden off the Spaniard, which seems even more relevant given Robbie Keane’s average start to his Anfield career. Of course Owen is a hero on Merseyside and a move for the front man must be a very tempting prospect for Rafa, but is it one he will make? What do the fans think, should they re-sign their former hero?
