Gareth Southgate decides to make a suggestion to Harry Redknapp in relation to the much talked about move for Downing, however his idea makes little or no sense!
Middlesbrough will demand highly-rated Tottenham teenager Gareth Bale as part of a £15million deal for England winger Stewart Downing.
Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has made Boro wideman Downing his top priority as he looks to wheel and deal to shake up his squad in the January transfer window.
Downing, 24, signed a five-year contract earlier this season so Boro will demand a sky-high price tag of around £15m.
Tottenham have made it clear they are ready to do a player-plus-cash deal for Downing. Boro were offered Spurs fringe players Hossam Ghaly, Gilberto and Adel Taarabt – but it is Bale who they will demand if they decide to allow Downing to move to White Hart Lane.
Welsh left-back Bale was a target for Manchester United when he joined Spurs 18 months ago and has also been tracked by Liverpool.
But his progress has been hit by injuries and Redknapp will now have a big decision to make. (Daily Mirror)
I really don’t see any sense in this deal whatsoever and I am sure that Harry would laugh at the idea of using a player of Gareth Bale’s ability and potential in such a deal. Whilst its true the Welshman hasn’t been at his best when he has seen action this term he is still only 19 and in my view is worth more than Stewart Downing and if Gareth Southgate has really suggested this then he is clearly having a laugh. By all means the likes of Gilberto and Ghaly could be added to help sway a move for the England winger but quite frankly I think the Boro man is worth avoiding altogether.Do Tottenham fans think that such a deal would be anything less than crazy!
