This source suggests that Mr. Wenger is about to spend big next month!
Arsenal are preparing a club record £20million bid for Russia forward Andrei Arshavin in a dramatic move to bolster their squad this January.
Gunners manager Arsene Wenger is breaking his habit of holding back transfer cash and Arshavin, the Zenit St Petersburg front man who was at the club’s London Colney training ground last week, is expected to join early next month.
Tottenham were close to landing the Euro 2008 star last summer and still hold out hope of securing him.
But the involvement of their north London rivals means they are unlikely to get their man, and that will come as a bitter blow to Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, who had the opportunity to sign Arshavin in August. (Mail on Sunday)
Well this is one hell of a rumour, but can it be true? Yes Wenger is known for being frugal and less likely to put a load of money on a well known player and more accustomed to taking younger players and turning them into the finished product but circumstances could dictate that the Frenchman has to act in a more urgent manner either in January or next summer. Arshavin is a genius of a player and one could argue that Arsenal need a defensive midfielder or a centre back ahead of a playmaker such as the Russian but if the Gunners boss wants to make it loud and clear that he has the cash and the intent to show his fellow title chasers (and make no mistake the north London side are very much in the title hunt whatever a certain Rio Ferdinand may believe) that he means business then he may well opt to try to sign the Zenit man. It would be a good move for the attacking midfielder who plays well in the hole behind the strikers as he has seen proposed moves to Barcelona and Spurs fail to materialise but at the Emirates he will at least be at a club that would best suits his style of play and his attacking vision. Some believe the deal would cost the club even more than the £20m valuation in this source but recent reports suggest the club has ample funds for the record breaking deal. So Arsenal fans, do you think this deal could happen?
