Apparently Harry Redknapp is looking at this youngster to help resolve his defensive frailties.
The Londoners have been heavily linked with Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing for some time, but it appears they have changed their Riverside Stadium focus to the tough central defender.
Wheater has recently been playing out of position at right-back for Gareth Southgate’s side, and this is something he admits he is uncomfortable to do as he prefers a central role.
“I don’t want to play at right-back. I think I need to concentrate on playing at centre-half,” he said. “I need to concentrate on one role. It will harm my international prospects if I keep shifting around.”
It is believed Harry Redknapp wants to add the 21-year-old to his squad when the transfer window reopens, and hopes an offer of £5million may be enough to strike a deal. (fansfc.com)
Gareth Southgate has a squad with a fair few good English prospects coming through the ranks and along with the impressive Adam Johnson; David Wheater is attracting admiring glances from fellow Premier League outfits. Liverpool were said to be considering a move for the giant centre back but no deal was forthcoming however I can see Harry trying very hard to sign the 21 year old centre back not least because injuries are decimating what little cover he has in that position. Do Tottenham fans think the club should make a move for the 6 foot 5 no nonsense defender?
