Arsenal and Tottenham are set for a bitter battle in their bid to sign Newcastle keeper Shay Given.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has reportedly tabled a bid of £8m for the Magpies man who has been at the club for 11 years and has 400 appearances under his belt.

But Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp, keen to replace Brazilian Heurelho Gomes, could take advantage of Newcastle’s desperate cash and player shortage by offering a fee plus out-of-favour defender Gareth Bale.
The Daily Express reports that Given is growing unhappy at life at St James’ Park and stormed off the pitch following the 5-1 home defeat to Liverpool two days ago.
Wenger has made his move early for Given, hoping the lure of Champions League football will persuade the 32-year-old Republic of Ireland star to head to the red half of North London next month.
Kinnear rates Given as the best keeper in the Premier League but needs an injection of funds quickly and already has a ready-made replacement in Steve Harper who has been with Newcastle for 15 years but has made just 72 League starts in that time. (Daily Mail)

Anyone who saw Given in action against Liverpool the other day would have seen just how impressive the Irish international can be and it really is no exaggeration to say that the score could have ended up in double figures without the Newcastle keeper’s heroics. Almunia is a very able keeper but is not in the same league as Shay so I can see what Arsene would be making such a move but surely he should be looking to strengthen his central defence and defensive midfield slots first? Do Arsenal fans think the club will need to buy big in January and if so, who should they sign?
