Jermain Defoe has told Portsmouth manager Tony Adams that he wants to rejoinTottenham.
Portsmouth have received verbal offers of between £12-16million from Aston Villa
and Spurs for the England striker and the cash-stricken south coast side favoured
Villa’s deal.
However, Defoe spoke to Adams yesterday and expressed his determination to link up once again with mentor Harry Redknapp rather than head for Villa Park.
Defoe joined Portsmouth from Spurs last January for £9m and some of the deal is still to be paid.
That would make Villa’s straight cash offer more appealing to Portsmouth, who are desperate to alleviate their debts despite selling Lassana Diarra to Real Madrid for £20m.
Villa manager Martin O’Neill yesterday denied making an offer for Defoe, but Redknapp has made no secret of his desire to sign the 26-year-old.
Redknapp was rebuffed in an attempt to sign Craig Bellamy from West Ham, with
Manchester City leading that chase, and he fears facing the relegation dogfight without another top-quality striker. (Daily Mail)

Harry Redknapp is desperate for some firepower to help his side battle the drop and even though both these targets have in recent days become problematic due to demands sought by both clubs, it does appear that both would very much like to move to White Hart Lane if given the opportunity so it would be interesting to see how this plays out. For instance, can Aston Villa really afford to fork out such a fee for Defoe, and in many ways I am wondering why they need to do so? After all only three teams have scored more than Martin O’Neil’s side and when John Carew is back in contention for a place they will be even more impressive going forward. Craig Bellamy is in a good vein of form right now but still don’t think he is worth the fee that West Ham want for him. Who would Tottenham fans rather have out of these two hitmen?
