Many Liverpool fans didn’t want to see Robbie Keane leave for Tottenham, although they’ll be even unhappier if Rafael Benitez allows this talented player to depart Anfield in the summer. While the Spaniard wants strength in every position to challenge for honours, it’s another matter trying to keep every player happy.
Daniel Agger has started to kick up a fuss with regard to signing a new contract, with The Guardian reporting that the Dane is considering a switch, unless he starts to get more first-team football for Liverpool. The central defender has had limited opportunities for the club recently, with Martin Skrtel the preferred partner to Jamie Carragher in the heart of the Reds defence. The 24-year-old is not a happy bunny.
“Let me be honest and admit that, if I don’t play, then it’s untenable and it can’t go on like that,” said the Dane.
The frustrated defender added: “It’s never fun as a footballer when you don’t play every time. That’s no secret. But that’s my situation in the club right now; that he [Benítez] won’t let me play. That’s not my decision. The question now is whether this is the right thing for me, because I would like to play some football.”
Ah the perils of being a Premier League manager, especially one who has a big squad of players all eager to get out there and strut their stuff. While Daniel Agger jumped ahead of Sami Hyypia in the pecking order a couple of seasons ago, he’s now been leapfrogged by Martin Skrtel. Would Liverpool supporters be gutted if Agger moved on to pastures new? It’s hard to see Rafa giving him too many more matches at the moment.
